Can technology help teachers to mitigate the impact of COVID?

The COVID-19 health crisis created a unique difficult situation for teachers. With little warning and preparation they were required to conduct distance teaching and support remote learning, yet many were unable given the number of households that lack the relevant technology, tools and connectivity to allow pupils/students participate in the distant learning activities. Moreover, many teachers do not have ICT tools at home, even those with access to the internet often lacked the ICT skills and confidence to effectively conduct teaching online. Are we ready to jump?

Today we propose to recover these principles of "technological disobedience" and bring them to the learning processes. Our main concern is that today the use of technology is very asymmetric and focused on consumption. That is, a few created (either technologies or content) and many consume it created by others. This creates asymmetry and dependence that are not positive. Today is time to reverse this symmetry. We must strengthen the ability to create content and create new ways of understanding technology (learning new languages and in some cases create new technology).

Cristóbal Cobo (PhD) Especialista Senior en Educación y Tecnología. Fundó y dirigió el Centro de Estudios – Fundación Ceibal (2014-2019). Investigador asociado del Instituto de Internet de la Universidad de Oxford (2009-2019). El trabajo de Cobo está en la intersección entre el futuro del aprendizaje, culturas de innovación y las tecnologías centradas en las personas.

Cristóbal ha sido distinguido por el Consejo Británico de Investigación Económica y Social (ESRC) y es investigador asociado del Centro de Habilidades, Conocimiento y Desempeño de la Universidad de Oxford. Previamente, fue profesor y director de Comunicaciones y Nuevas Tecnologías en la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, sede México.

Ha sido evaluador externo del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), la National Science Foundation y MIT Press (USA), la Organización Internacional del Trabajo, Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo (Canadá). Experto Invitado para RAND EU en tendencias futuras en tecnología y educación, comisionado por la Oficina de Consejeros de Política Europea (BEPA). Posee un PhD “cum laudem” Ciencias de la Comunicación en Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Co-autor de Aprendizaje Invisible. Su libro más reciente es "Acepto las Condiciones: Usos y abusos de las tecnologías digitales", (Fundación Santillana, Madrid, 2019). “Innovación Pendiente” (Penguin Random House, 2016). Ha sido conferencista invitado en más de 30 países (+ 4 TEDx).

Miembro del Grupo de Expertos en aprendizaje móvil. Education 2030 Framework (Unidad para TIC en la Educación, División de Políticas y Sistemas de Aprendizaje Permanente, UNESCO, París). Miembro de la red "University of the Future Network (UFN)". Con intervenciones en CNN, Deutsche Welle, El Pais o Le Monde Diplomatique o Wall Street Journal.

Cristobal Cobo (PhD) Senior Education Specialist (Technology). Dr. Cobo served as founding Director of the Center for Research – Ceibal Foundation in Uruguay (2014-2019). Associated researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford (2009-2019). Cobo works at the intersection between the future of learning, a culture of innovation and human centered technologies.

Cristobal has been distinguished by the British Council of Economic and Social Research (ESRC) and associate research fellow at the Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance, University of Oxford. He was Professor and director of Communication and New Technologies at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, Mexico.

He has served as external Evaluator for the Inter-American Development Bank; the National Science Foundation and MIT Press (US), International Labour Organization (UN), and the International Development Research Centre (Canada). He has PhD “cum laudem” Communication Sciences at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Co-author of the book Invisible Learning, his most recent books is “Innovación Pendiente” (Penguin Random House, 2016). His latest book is "I accept the terms and conditions: Uses and abuses of digital technologies" (in Spanish) by Santiallana, 2019. He has been speaker in more than 30 countries (+ 4 TEDx).

Member of Expert Group on mobile learning. Education 2030 Framework (Unit for ICT in Education, Division for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems, UNESCO, Paris).
